Bio
Korean-Canadian violinist Yoona Kang began playing the violin at the age of five. By eight, she was already competing in prestigious national competitions in Korea, earning numerous prizes. Among her early achievements were performing Bach's Double Concerto with violinist Yoojin Jang on a tour of Russia with the Cheong Ju Philharmonic Orchestra and winning the grand prize at the Dong Yang Il Bo Competition. She was also invited to perform at Osaka Japan City Hall at the age of nine.
After moving to Vancouver with her family, Yoona continued her musical journey at the Vancouver Music Academy, where she studied with Gerald Stanick. During her time at the academy, she earned multiple first prizes at the Kiwanis Music Festival, Burnaby Clef Competition, and Coquitlam Competition, leading to numerous gala concerts. She was also chosen by the conductor, who attended the winner's gala concert, to perform as a soloist with the Burnaby Symphony Orchestra at their grand premiere concert. Before attending college, she had already won first prize at the British Columbia Provincial Competition and third prize at the Canadian Music Competition (CMC), competing against many accomplished Canadian musicians who remain prominent today.
At Indiana University, where she studied with Alexander Kerr and Mauricio Fuks, Yoona was the runner-up in the Bruch Scottish Fantasy Concerto Competition, leading to two run throughs with the Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra. She also won first prize at the Indianapolis Musicale Competition, was a finalist at the TD Music Scholarship Competition, and received the audience prize. As a passionate ensemble player, she performed Kaleidoscopic Memories, a quartet piece composed by Dr. Jin Soo Kim, at Auer Concert Hall. Selected through an audition at the Bloomington Campus, she participated in the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival spending two full months at Salzau, followed by chamber music program, which marked her first visit to Europe. Yoona completed her final summer semester at IU with legendary pedagogue Nam Yun Kim, who will always remain to be her hero.
At the Dresden Musikhochschule, where she studied with Ivan Zenaty and John Holloway, Yoona won first place at the "International Competition Citta Barletta" in Italy and was selected to participate in the prestigious Moritzburg Chamber Music Academy directed by cellist Jan Vogler. She also took part in masterclasses with Igor Ozim and Hu Kun, where she performed Brahms' Violin Concerto.
During her first semester at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln where she studied with Ariadne Daskalakis, she was selected to perform at Strauss's 150th Birthday Concert, playing the second violin part in "Metamorphosen" alongside her colleagues and professors from the Köln Musikhochschule. She won several orchestra auditions, including for the Staatskapelle Halle Orchestra, Folkwang Kammerorchester Essen, and Mitteldeutsche Philharmonie.
Yoona has performed in numerous concerts worldwide, including solo performances at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall as a prize for winning first place at the Korean-American Hymn Competition, the Aronoff Center for the Arts as a finalist at the Overture Awards, and as a soloist with Cincinnati's Starling Orchestra under the direction of Kurt Sassmannshaus. She also performed Mozart Violin Concerto at Cheongju Arts Centre which was broadcasted by CBS. Her orchestral performances have taken place at venues such as the Wiener Konzerthaus, Dresden Staatskapelle, John F.Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Konzerthaus Berlin, and many more.
After she has completed her studies, she moved to Seoul served as a substitute first violinist with the Seoul Philharmonic and KT Symphony Orchestra and was selected as a government-funded orchestral training internship candidate for Symphony SONG.
Having recently returned to Toronto, she enjoys camping with her family and taking photos of her pet bunny, Marshmallow.
Yoona plays on a violin crafted by one of the most renowned living violin makers, Stefan-Peter Greiner.
